Terms of Use

Last updated 2 October 2026

Who we are and how these terms apply

BudgetWalk is operated by Stackpole Holdings (“BudgetWalk”, “we”, “us”). Contact us at hello@budgetwalk.com. Business contact address: 435 Park St, Charlottesville, VA 22902-4766, USA.

These terms govern your licence and use of BudgetWalk guides. They form part of your purchase when presented to you and accepted during the purchase process. Our Refund Policy also applies. Our Privacy Notice explains how we handle personal information.

You buy through Gumroad, the merchant of record and authorized reseller. Its terms govern the transaction with it; these terms govern the BudgetWalk licence. Gumroad processes payment, applicable sales tax or VAT, refunds and chargebacks. Its name appears on your receipt or payment statement. Nothing in either policy removes rights that applicable law gives you.

What you are buying

A single payment gives you access to every self-guided audio walking guide published on BudgetWalk, including future guides, for as long as the site operates, subject to these terms. There is no subscription or recurring charge. We do not promise a minimum number or frequency of new guides.

Each guide is a web page with a numbered route, written commentary and photographs. Commentary is read aloud using your device or browser’s speech service. We do not provide a human narrator, a separate app, offline maps, a tour leader or admission to attractions.

The total price, including applicable taxes, is shown at checkout. Check the product description and compatibility information before buying.

Your key and three activations

Your receipt email contains a licence key with three included activations. You may use them yourself or share the key privately with travelling companions so they can use the guides within that limit. Listening or viewing together on an activated device is also permitted. The key must not be posted publicly, sold or offered to an unrestricted group.

Keep your key and receipt. Access is remembered in the browser you use. Changing devices or browsers, using private browsing, or clearing browser storage may require another activation. If you reach the limit, contact us; we can review a request to restore access after a genuine device or browser change. Additional activations or resets are not automatic.

Anyone you give access to must follow the permitted-use rules below. A refunded purchase no longer authorizes use by you or your companions.

Permitted use and ownership

You receive a personal licence for non-commercial travel, including the limited companion use above. You may save or print guides for that use and use them repeatedly while your licence remains valid. You may not transfer or resell the purchase to someone else.

Without our written permission, you may not redistribute or republish the guides; sell access or copies; use our protected content to produce a competing product; run paid or tipped tours using the guides; or bypass access controls. These restrictions do not limit uses that applicable law permits without our consent.

Rights in our original text, photographs, graphics, design and guide compilations belong to us or our licensors. Purchasing access does not transfer those rights. We do not claim ownership of public streets, historical facts or third-party materials.

Accuracy, admission and access

We use our best efforts to research routes and check information when creating each guide, and we work to keep the guides up to date. We do not continuously monitor every stop and, to the extent permitted by law, do not guarantee that every statement, opening time or route detail is accurate, complete or current. Opening hours, fees, closures, construction and street layouts can change. Routes are designed primarily around free attractions and exterior viewing based on information available when researched. Free access or admission at the time of your visit is not guaranteed. Check current opening times, charges and access restrictions before setting out. Ordinary inaccuracies, estimated timings or changes in local conditions do not, by themselves, create a voluntary refund entitlement. This does not exclude remedies required by law for faulty or materially misdescribed content.

Paid interiors or other optional attractions may be mentioned, but their admission is not included. Walking distances, times and route suggestions are estimates. Historical traditions and legends should not be treated as verified events where the guide identifies them as such.

Safety and accessibility

You take the tour and follow its route at your own risk. These are self-guided routes, not supervised activities or assurances that a route is safe or suitable for you. Assess conditions and your own abilities. Routes may include stairs, steep gradients, cobbles, uneven surfaces and road crossings. Unless a guide expressly confirms otherwise, its exact route has not been verified as step-free or wheelchair accessible.

Follow local laws, signs and closures; do not enter restricted or private areas; and use a safe alternative when needed. Pay attention to traffic and surroundings, avoid phone or audio distractions, and take appropriate care in poor weather or after dark. Children should be supervised by a responsible adult. These precautions do not exclude any responsibility we have under applicable law.

Technical requirements and other services

You need a modern browser and internet access to unlock and load guides. Directions open in Google Maps, which has its own terms and privacy practices; live directions generally require a data connection. Mobile data or roaming charges are your responsibility. Narration availability, pronunciation and voice quality depend on your device, browser and speech service.

You may save available guide content for personal use, but saving a page does not guarantee that its images, narration, links, licence checks or maps will work offline. We do not control third-party services or promise their uninterrupted availability.

Availability and changes to guides

We take reasonable steps to maintain access, but interruptions can occur. We may correct or replace guides, or remove individual guides for safety, legal or other reasonable reasons. This does not remove remedies you have if the product fails to meet the contract or applicable consumer law.

If we plan to close the site permanently, we will take reasonable steps to notify purchasers in advance using their purchase email and give them an opportunity to save available guide content. We cannot promise advance notice of an unexpected shutdown or continued online functionality after closure. Lawfully saved copies remain licensed for personal use after a planned closure, unless the purchase has been refunded or the licence lawfully terminated.

Suspending or ending access

We may temporarily suspend access where reasonably necessary to investigate suspected fraud, public key sharing, unauthorized redistribution or interference with the service. We may end a licence for a material breach of these terms. Where practicable, we will explain the reason and allow a reasonable opportunity to resolve the issue; immediate action may be needed to prevent ongoing harm.

If you believe we made a mistake, email us for review. Any action must be proportionate and consistent with applicable law. Ending access does not remove any refund or other remedy required by law.

Consumer rights and liability

Your mandatory consumer rights remain in place, including applicable rights concerning digital content that is faulty, misdescribed or not supplied. All purchases are final, except where applicable law requires otherwise or Gumroad issues a refund under its own policies. We do not offer a voluntary satisfaction guarantee or change-of-mind refunds. See our Refund Policy.

Subject to those rights and to the extent permitted by applicable law, the guides are provided on an “as available” basis without additional warranties beyond those expressly given. We exclude liability for indirect or consequential losses, including business losses arising from prohibited commercial use. Our total liability for claims arising from the affected purchase is limited to the total purchase price you paid for it, including payment made through Gumroad.

These exclusions and limits do not apply to fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury resulting from negligence where liability cannot lawfully be limited, or any other liability or remedy that applicable law does not allow us to exclude or restrict.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA, subject to any mandatory protections that apply where you live. This choice does not restrict a consumer’s right to bring proceedings in a court available under applicable law.

Changes to these terms

The version accepted for your purchase governs that purchase. New terms may apply to future purchases. Material changes to an existing purchase require any notice or agreement required by law; posting an update alone does not remove access already bought or mandatory rights. The date above identifies this version.

If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply so far as the law permits. Nothing here restricts a consumer’s mandatory choice of law, right to bring proceedings or access to remedies.
